Agility
The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes agility as “the ultimate game for you and your dog.” It is the fastest growing sport in the United States and is the fastest growing event at the AKC. This is mainly due to the fact that is a sport enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike.
In agility, a dog demonstrates its ability to be agile and versatile. Through a specifically ordered and timed obstacle course, the dog follows visual and verbal cues from its handler. These courses contain a variety of obstacles requiring the dog to perform a variety of skills.
The AKC offers two types of agility venues: Standard and Jumpers with Weaves. In Standard courses the dog encounters weave poles, A-frame, teeter, bridge, tunnels, a table and a variety of jumps. In Jumpers with Weaves the dog encounters weave poles, tunnels and a variety of jumps. Both venues are offered for all levels from beginning to advanced. Once a dog has completed the advanced levels, he/she may begin working toward Master levels and eventually a MACH (Master Agility Champion).
Members of the Inland Empire Collie Club have been competing in agility since the late 1990s. Some members have even competed at the Collie Club of America National Specialty. There are several agility trials in the Pacific Northwest and two two-day events held by the Spokane Dog Training Club here in Spokane.
