What We Have Been Doing
IECC should be very proud of the fact that we’ve managed to sponsor three major events in a single month. We started off April with our fun match with a nice obedience and conformation entry, as well as a good turn out by people taking advantage of the opportunity to practice the new titling sport of Rally. Several of our members got to practice with their own dogs, and by the end of the day we had raked in an amazing $1100 in profit. Thanks to everyone who came out to help, and especially thanks to whomever it was who arranged for all the bad weather to fall the previous weekend, leaving us with a sunny day to entice dog folks out to play.
Two weekends later we celebrated our 50th Anniversary at our annual Specialty in Moses Lake. Karen Hathaway did a great job of chairing the event and keeping things running smoothly. We always have great pot luck dinners afterwards, but we outdid ourselves this time, topped off by a picture perfect cake with ice cream for dessert. The trophy table full of collie related needle work received lots of compliments, and the DVD featuring pictures of IECC members and dogs past and present seemed to draw a lot of attention, and we had a lot of action around our raffle table. This specialty will be a tough act to follow.
I’m very happy to announce that the recipient of this year’s Good Sportsmanship Award was presented to Sandy Kirsch at our specialty pot luck dinner. Sandy has been a long time member who has always been active in a variety of collie activities. This past year she has really gone “above and beyond”, traveling all the way from her new home in South Dakota to participate and help out at events, as well as catch up on the news from all her friends back in Spokane/Coeur d’Alene. She’s even attended meetings via telephone. Now that’s dedication!
And then, a mere two weeks later IECC held its first ever tracking test. We had an entry of nine dogs with four local teams and one team from the coast passing the test. It was a little disappointing that we didn’t have any collies entered, but hopefully that just means that there will be that many more ready to enter next spring.
Brags
Conformation:
As a warm up before our specialty, Linda Ward traveled over to the coast for the Timberland shows on April 9 and brought home two points on her smooth sable male Phoenix who went BOW on Saturday and WD on Sunday.
At our specialty the following week, Phoenix’s smooth tri daddy Archer went BOS to BOV. Midnight, an Archer daughther was selected as Best Bred by Exhibitor smooth at the specialty and then went RWB at the Moses Lake Show on Saturday. On Sunday, Phoenix picked up 2 more points at the Ephrata/Moses Lake shows. Keeping things all in the family, Archer’s littermate CJ was BOV at Ephrata/Moses Lake on Saturday.
Not all of the IECC conformation wins have been by the smooths. Cheryl Hess’ Sophie (Bloomsday Sophisticate) upheld the honor of our roughs by going BOW and BOV at the Walla Walla KC show on Friday. April 29.

Obedience
We had seven entries in the regular obedience classes at our specialty, and I’m happy to report that my Stanley managed to eke out High In Trial from the Open B class despite a couple creative fronts, and a bit of a detour on the figure-8. I was even prouder of his auntie Nori who came out of obedience retirement at age 11 for the non-regular Veterans class. Despite a couple senior moments when she kinda forgot about those automatic sits on the heeling exercises, Nori ended up with with the highest score of the day. Once again, hooray for old bitches!

Agility
Linda and Tanya Ward had a busy weekend at Moses Lake. When not in the breed ring they were running multiple dogs in agility, and doing a lot of running between rings, I”m sure. Tanya: handled Taffy to a 1st place in the Advanced Jumpers Preferred class to finish Taffy’s AJP title and earn her official retirement from agility. Again, hooray for old bitches! Tanya had a nice weekend with her rough male Ranger as well, finishing his Novice preferred title with a 2nd place and a perfect score, and finishing his Novice Preferred Jumpers title with 2 qualifying runs and a fourth place. Completing these agility titles now makes Ranger eligible for the CCA Versatility Award.
Tracking
Have I mentioned that we held our first TD test and it was a great success and that we are the first collie specialty club to have ever held a tracking test? I have? Several times? OK. Well, in other news, the week after our very successful, first ever, first tracking test ever held by a collie club, Stanley and I successfully completed a track at the Spokane Dog Training Club test to earn his TDX. It only took us a mere 50 excruciatingly long minutes to run a half mile long track. About half of that time was spent within 60 yards of the final glove, desperately, and I do mean DESPERATELY, searching for the scent at the last of six turns on the top of a bare rock outcrop on a 3 hour old track. Stanley now joins his auntie Nori as one of only two collies to have earned both a TDX and an HX.
Inland Empire Collie Club: The Movie
Well, ok, it’s not technically a movie but copies of the slide show that premiered at the specialty are available for the low! low! price of $10 which will include delivery by hand or by postal service. The slide show consists of about 160 photos of IECC collies and their people. A couple dozen of those slides are from the good ol’ days, including several formal show pictures, and some candids. The rest of the photos feature more recent champions, collies who have earned various AKC performance titles, and about 50 pictures of members’ collies just being collies with their families and friends. I will burn copies of the DVD after school is out in June. If you’d like a copy, send me a check for $10 by June 1.
Speaking of Pictures...
.... So, what’s up with the editor only putting pictures of her own dogs in the newsletter? Are you fed up with the blatant bias she displays in only featuring her own admittedly adorable collies? Wanna do something about this vulgar display of favoritism? Well, you can start by sending me some pictures of YOUR collies. Or even some of your other critters. I accept pictures by regular mail or e-mail. If they are electronic pictures, only send a couple of them at a time so that my computer doesn’t melt downloading them, but I’d be happy to spice up the newsletter with some pictures of collies that don’t actually live with me. And while you are sending me photos, send in some news. It doesn’t have to be a brag, or even collie related. Let us know what’s up in your neck of the woods.
