What We Have Been Doing
Our September meeting was held at Sharon Holden's on Sept 8. We discussed the possibility of sponsoring a seminar on canine reproduction. Linda Ward suggested asking Dr Cathy King, a reproductive specialists who has a vet practice north of Spokane. Linda will contact Dr King about her availability and fees.
Linda has arranged with the BLM for us to use the property near Fishtrap for a Tracking Dog test again next spring. Karen Hathaway will be the TD test chair, and judges will be Annette Kettleson from Kalispell MT and myself. Start training those tracking collies now so we have some collie entries next spring!
Our judges for our spring specialty will be Linda Tefelski for conformation, Jane Aker Weaver for sweepstakes, and Alan Immerman for obedience and junior handling. Start grooming those conformation collies and teaching them to stack themselves perfectly, and start training those obedience collies to heel with the utmost in enthusiasm and willingness!
Sharon Holden reported that our treasury contains just over $2400.
We held our annual AKC Herding trials over Labor Day weekend, and generated nearly $600 in profit. Besides the financial success, read about the trialing successes in the brag section. And a huge THANK YOU to member JUDY GARBARINO for stepping in to act as a substitute judge when one of our contracted judges was unable to attend due to a family emergency. Judy had come up here to trial, and made a big sacrifice to give up her chance to compete in order to judge for us.
Brags
Conformation:
After a warm summer of no coats/no shows, the fall conformation season is starting up. At the Wenatchee KC shows, Sara Derr's smooth tri male Storm took BOB both days. Linda Ward showed Phoenix to WD/BOW twice in Wenatchee and then again once in Richland the following weekend. Linda's tri smooth bitch puppy Midnight also did well in Richland going WB/BOS both days.
Bonnie Young's smooth tri Whoopi earned four points in Wenatchee going WB/BOS both days. Whoopi was occupied being a herding collie for the Richland shows (see herding brags), but her son Mark made his debut the day he turned 6 months on Sunday at Richland going WD. I hope Bonnie checked Mark's time of birth against the ring time - that's cutting the six month age limit pretty close!
Joan Meagher's smooth sable bitch Kessa got to be the reserve queen for the month, taking two of those ribbons home from Wenatchee and one from Richland.
Once again Cheryl Hess complemented the IECC smooth wins with some nice wins in the rough collie ring. On Sunday at Richland her Sophie (Bloomsday Sophisticate) went all the way to BOV from the bred by exhibitor class, and then continued on to a Group 4.
Obedience
Linda was very very pleased to report that her smooth tri bitch Kit completed her CD at the Spokane Dog Training Club obedience trials October 8. Kit is now CH Sinkona Miss Kitty CD, PT, OA, OAJ, and reportedly is quite pleased to end her obedience career at this point.
Cheryl took a day off from showing in conformation to show a couple of her collies in the new sport of Rally. At the Columbia Basin Dog Training Club trial, both her smooth collie Dylan (CH. Bloomsday Catch the Wind CGC) and her rough Mandy (Bloomsday Love Affair CGC) qualified in Rally Novice B.
Herding
Besides earning a nice profit, our Labor Day herding trials generated several opportunities for brags. Ric White entered the AKC herding arena for the first time at our trials with his rough tri bitch Ditto. Ric had the "misfortune" of being adopted by Ditto after she had already earned 2 HSAs legs last summer, so unlike the rest of us he hasn't had the opportunity to get some trial experience in the test classes first. His hard work this summer catching up with his dog's prior training paid off on when they qualified on Monday of the trials to complete Ditto's HSAs.
Whoopi, a smooth tri bitch owned and bred by Bonnie Young, was handled by me to a leg in HSAs on Labor Day as well. I enjoyed handling her so much that I lured her away from conformation shows to take her to trials in Olympia the first weekend in October, where she earned her second HSAs leg.
Forest, a rough tri male bred by Bonnie and co-owned by me and Bonnie, earned two HSAs legs with a 4th and a 2nd placement at our trials. He joined Whoopi in qualifying in Olympia with a nice score of 93 to finish his HSAs, and earned a spare leg the following day.

And Stanley and I have had a very good month of herding competition if I do say so myself. "Da Man" was first place in ducks and sheep the first day of our trials, was Reserve HIT from the duck class on Sunday, and Reserve HIT from the sheep class on Monday. Then we went on the road to the Collie Club of Washington collie specialty duck trial the following weekend, and to trials in Olympia in October. In all we came home with four HIT ribbons, two legs in the advanced B course duck class to finish his HXBd title, a couple nice qualifying scores on advance A course sheep, and a first and second place on started B course sheep for his first two legs in that class . Oh, and he finished his AKC Herding Championship at our Labor Day weekend trial. I think I may keep him, even if he isn't the smooth sable bitch that I had put in a request for nearly eight years ago. The question is, will he want to keep me?

Suzanne & HERDING CHAMPION Stanley
Isn't this the way collie handlers always stack champions?
Agility
In case learning all the ins and outs of herding wasn't enough for Ric this summer, he also ran Ditto in agility at the Spokane Dog Training Club trial the end of August. Together they earned a second place in standard novice and a third place in novice jumpers for the weekend. In the spirit of keeping up with Dad, Justin White had two great runs with Shivan in the preferred novice jumpers class, and came away with the High in Class Award both days. With all those ribbons that the tri collies are earning, there won't be room on the mantle for any trophies for Eileen's new puppy!

Department of Uncollies
Our herding trials provided some brags for some of our members with "other" breeds as well. Laurie Politte and her border collie Blue earned a HIT from the sheep class on Monday at our Labor Day trials, and picked up 3 points toward his HC for the weekend to bring his total to 6 points. And Judy Garbarino's pembroke corgi Roper earned two qualifying legs in started sheep and one on ducks, while big brother Colt earned qualifying scores in advanced ducks both days that he ran.
News from the Hinterlands
South Dakota
Sandy Kirsch reports that her lambs are growing nicely, and keeping her entertained. Apparently the entertainment goes both ways, as she claims they enjoy reading over her shoulder when she gets the newsletter. No doubt they are interested in keeping up with the latest herding news. Halley and the lambs have a daily routine worked out. In true farm dog style, Sandy can just tell Haley where to put the lambs, and Haley takes over from there. Sometimes she pushes them, and sometimes she leads them, and sometime she apparently enjoys a snack with them, but the sheep know to do as Haley directs them.
Sandy and Rich's new house is in the foreground and in the back you can see the old house on the property. Sandy says the old house has converted into quarters for the dogs. Hmmm. That's a pretty darned fancy dog house. Then again, I guess it's not as bad as Bonnie Young converting the living room of her old house into a sheep barn.
Uh, oh! Perhaps I spoke too soon.
