What We Have Been Doing
Our November meeting was held at Bonnie Young’s house on Nov 17. Sharon Holden reported that we presently have about $2700 in our treasury. We discussed having some sort of video or slide show to run at our 50th Anniversary Specialty this April. Linda Ward will investigate costs for having slides and video transferred to a DVD that could be shown at the Specialty. I am working on a Powerpoint type slide show that hopefully can also be transferred to a DVD. If you have a few pictures you would like to contribute, let me know. Formal show pictures are nice, especially pictures from the past. Pictures of members doing other things with their collies would also be appreciated. These could be pictures of competitive activities like obedience, but could also be shots of just having fun with the dogs. If you have anything you would like to contribute, contact me by the end of January and I we can work out the best format to send the photos to me.
Karen Hathaway and Eileen White are continuing to work on a brochure to publicize our club. We hope to have something printed by February that can be displayed at shows, vets’ offices, and pet shops to let collie owners in the area know about us. Caroline Baines is working on our 2004 CCA Yearbook ad to highlight our collies who earned AKC and CKC titles this year.
We voted on Member of the Year and Good Sportsman Award of the Year. We also discussed designing some sort of plaque or award to be presented at our specialty to the owners of collies who were awarded Performance ROM status this year.
Many of our members gathered at Sharon Holden’s Winter Wonderland for our Christmas party on December 12. We enjoyed lots of good food, and good company, and bidding on the brown bag gifts was spirited, as usual, with Sandy Kirsch joining in via telephone all the way from South Dakota. Awards were presented to this year’s title recipients, and Tanya Ward was presented with the Member of the Year Award. Tanya had lots of success in the show ring this year, finishing a CH and a PT on Ranger, and completing an HS, an AXP, and a VCX on Taffy. On top of her own successes, Tanya is always willing to help out at all our events, and is even cheerful about it as long as it isn’t early in the morning.

Conformation:
Sara Derr made the trip all the way to Florida for the Eukanuba AKC National Championship with her smooth tri male Shay (CH Bethara’s Power Shayker), and came home with an Award of Merit. This is a follow up to last year when Shay placed in the group at the big Eukanuba show. Quite an accomplishment to have had back to back recognition at that level.
While Sara was enjoying sunny warm Florida, a few of our members braved the passes to go to the shows in Puyallup. I don’t have a full report yet, but Sharon Holden earned a RWB on her smooth tri bitch Cheyenne (Pineriver Repeat Performance). And in the un-collie department, Joyce Berk’s saluki Daryl (CH Shadaglen Thunder MTN Fiddler) took a couple BOB’s, and went all the way to a Group 1 one day.
Goodbye's:
Lauretta Jenkins lost her smooth sable female Reggie (Redwood Mountain Regina PT HTD 1 HRD2) suddenly in mid December. Lauretta did both pet assisted therapy and herding with Reggie and had started her in tracking as well. Over the years Lauretta has sent me several pictures of Reggie, and what strikes me about them is that they always show Reggie with another animal - baby chicks, goats, sheep, cats, a cockatiel (I think)..... Reggie epitomized the friend-to-all creatures that characterizes the collie temperament, and she applied her naturally sweet temperament to every task. By working methodically and calmly she earned multiple HIT’s in AHBA events, managing the sheep that were too easily spooked by flashier competitors. She left Lauretta’s life much to early.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR MEMBERS
The White House, contrary to what you may have thought, is not inhabited by Bushes. Our White Household consists of Ric and Eileen, who have been married for 22 year, 15 year old Justin, two collies, and a pair of cats who answer to Jake and Xena. Eileen was the first member of the family to own a collie, having saved her lunch money when she was 13 to buy her first collie from Bonnie Young. Eileen has especially fond memories of her sable male Knack (CH Shadaglen Got The Knack) who ranked #12 in the country back in the day. After being collie-less for over a decade, family history repeated itself two years ago when 13 year old Justin acquired his first collie from Bonnie - a tri female named Shivan (Shadaglen Wings Of Fire HT, NAJ). Justin and his parents had been coming out to our herding trials for a couple years before they got Shivan, and so he was anxious to work with her in that sport. This summer he handled Shivan to a herding title leg through AHBA, finished an HT and earned one PT leg with Shivan at our AKC trials, and completed a Novice Jumpers title in agility. Ric has been supporting his “dog nerd” wife and son by working as Fleet Manager for Pepsi (and making sure no one drinks Coke at our events) and by always lending a hand at herding and agility events. As a reward for all his duck wrangling, agility jump construction, and dog event taxi service, Ric got to have his very own collie this fall when Ditto (Shadaglen Say It Again PT) joined the family. Ric and Justin have been working on adding tracking to their collie repetoire this fall and winter, and Eileen has been making sure that leashes and harnesses stay color coordinated, and that everyone stays warm while the tracks are laid. The Whites have made some new friends through their dog activities, including a couple families who compete in agility and fly ball with their border collies Pandy and Maggie. Because Pandy, Maggie, and Shivan and their families are so often seen together at events, Eileen has decided to psychologically scar Justin for life by hanging a banner over their crates proclaiming them the “PMS Club”. Eileen is looking forward to joining Ric and Justin at dog events with a puppy of her own soon. Perhaps Ric will let Ditto take some time off for maternity leave if the right handsome sable male suitor comes calling.
