We held our montly meeting at Sharon Holden’s on May 12. The nominating committee submitted the following slate of nominees for officers: President - Karen Hathaway; Vice-President - Linda Ward; Secretary - Eileen White; Treasurer - Sharon Holden; Board - Suzanne Schwab, Joyce Berk, and Joan Meagher. There were no nominations from the floor. Election of officers will take place at the June meeting.

Sharon reported that we have just over $3200 in our treasury. We went about $100 in the red on our tracking test, but have trophies left over for subsequent tests. We voted to hold another tracking test next spring.

Our summer picnic will be August 21, starting at 1:30 at Michael and Joan Meagher’s house. Come! Sit! Stay! Have a treat!

If you haven’t already done so, check out the IECC website designed and maintained by Caroline Baines at www.inlandempirecollieclub.org. Lots of great photos, and lots of great memories of collies who have been part of our lives.

Brags
Conformation:
The Memorial Day weekend circuit in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene provided some nice wins for our conformation collies. Sara Derr’s Storm (CH Bethara Midnight Rain) earned two Group 4’s in Spokane, and then took a Group 3 in Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday. Looks like Storm is well on his way to following in papa Shay's footsteps in the conformation ring.

Linda and Tanya’s smooth blue bitch CJ was BOS at the Spokane Shows on Sunday and BOV in Coeur d’Alene on Monday. CJ’s nephew Phoenix, was BOW on Sunday. Phoenix’s young half sister Midnight was RWB on Saturday and Sunday in Spokane, and BOW for her first point in Coeur d’Alene on Monday. Midnight also took a fourth place in the Puppy Herding Group on Monday. Rounding out the Ward weekend, Tanya handled Pearl to RWB on Monday.

Sharon handled Bonnie Young’s Candy (Shadaglen Bit O’ Honey) to two BOW’s, once on Sunday in Spokane, and again on Tuesday in Coeur d’Alene for her first two points. Sharon was also busy handling her own two dogs. Her smooth bitch Cheyenne was BOS on Saturday, and WB on Sunday for 2 pts. Cheyenne’s rough litter brother Catcher also picked up a couple points as WD on Sunday and Monday with a reserve on Tuesday.

Eileen White handled my rough male Forrest (Shadaglen Give And Take) to RWD on Sunday and Monday.

Obedience
Prior to a busy week in the conformation ring, Linda entered her smooth tri bitch Kit in the obedience trials at Spokane Dog Training Club and came home with two qualifying scores toward Kit’s CD.

Herding

Spokane Dog Training Club started off our herding season with a B-course (open field) duck herding trial in May. This was our own local little evening trial with just eight entries. Laurie Politte and her border collie Blue took top honors with a gorgeous run in the intermediate class with a score of 95. This completed Blue’s HIBd title. Stanley earned a leg in our first attempt at the advanced B course, and my 11 year old Nori qualified in the intermediate level. Also showing in the Hooray for Old Bitches category was Linda and Tanya Ward’s 10 year old Kelley who was Reserve HIT from the started class in her first ever attempt at B course. Agility

And, a week before SDTC’s obedience trial, Tanya ran her rough sable male Ranger in SDTC’s agility trial. Ranger had a perfect run for his first Open Preferred leg where they missed out on first place by a mere 1/10th of a second.

At Your Service
So, who’s that handsome smooth collie pictured on the first page? The dog with mission is Dipper, a smooth collie co-bred by Kathy Dillon in PA and Bonnie Young. Dipper is from a litter sired by Bonnie’s Hunter (CH Shadaglen Look For Me HSAd) out of Kathy and Bonnie’s Lindy (CH Sunbriar Swingtime PT). Dipper is a graduate of Freedom Guide Dog School in NY, and Kathy reports that the school was very impressed with their first smooth collie guide dog. They told her that’d be happy to take any more like him into their program. How great to see an intelligent, sensible, and hard working collie putting those traits to such good purpose!

Off to the Golden State...
Lauretta Jenkins will be packing up her household and critters next month for a move to the Bakersfield CA area where her husband is now employed. While we all wish Lauretta the best in her new home, we’re also sorry to see her move so far away. She has always been a cheerful and willing worker, often helping out at events even if she wasn’t participating as an exhibitor. We’ll look forward to getting reports from Lauretta from way down south in the future. Maybe she can send us some California sunshine in the winter.

Milestones
Before we bid her a fond farewell, we also want to wish Lauretta a happy 50th birthday this month. Turning 50 isn’t so bad. Not that I would know from personal experience or anything.

And speaking of being really old, Joan Meagher celebrated the 15th birthday of her sheltie Dixie on June 1st. One of the two birthday girls is pictured to the right. Dixie came to live with Joan after Joan’s mother passed away, and she’s been ruling over the collies ever since.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
After a month of visiting and participating in our specialty and helping out at our tracking test, Sandy Kirsch headed back home to South Dakota the day after our May meeting. She drove straight through to make it home in a mere 17 1/2 hours. Yikes - that’s a lonnng drive. Sandy got home just in time to become step mother to three lambs - one of which was rejected by his mother and has “adopted” Sandy as his new mommie. Sandy’s rough blue bitch Haley is getting to be quite the accomplished sheep dog now that she gets to work her own little flock every day. Sandy and the lambs go for a daily walk out to get the mail, and Haley makes sure the lambs stick with their leader, and makes sure they go back in the barn after “recess” is over. This year’s cool rainy spring apparently extended into South Dakota, as Sandy reports that everything is very green, except for the parts that are muddy. The greenery is apparently bringing out the wildlife, as Sandy reports that she gets to enjoy her morning coffe (but no lattes in South Dakota!) while watching deer, wild turkeys, pheasants, eagles, hawks, and lots of song birds. She’s thinking there may be some more sheep in her future, and perhaps even a horse once the fence fairy comes and makes a corral or two.

Thanks!
Many thank you’s to everyone who sent news and pictures this month. See. Isn’t it more fun when you all get to look at pictures of other dogs besides mine! Keep ‘em coming.
